Story |
1914-1917 |

- Lieutenant Leonard George Prentice Errey, DSO,MC, 8th Battalion, AIF.
Leonard George Prentice Errey, enlisted on 16th August 1914, as a private aged 22. In civilian life he had been a carpenter living in Campertown, Victoria. He is listed as being a member of the Campertown Rifle Club.
He received the Military Cross in April 1917, the citation reads:
"During the operations in front of Queant and Phonville, 19th April 1917, 2nd Lieut ERREY'S work was of an extremely courageous and useful nature. His duties included patrolling no man's land in front of his Company sector. In this he showed great courage and initiative. He went through the enemy's wire and gained valuable information at great personal risk. On the night of 10th April 1917 he encountered an enemy patrol of 56 strong. His party was only 8 strong and the enemy endeavoured to surround him. Not withstanding this he gave them fight and succeeded in driving them off with bombs and rifle fire. He handled his men with great skill and got back without a casualty, the enemy leaving 4 dead on the field. Lieut. ERREY is a young officer who has been with the Battalion since shortly after its inception and is a splendid leader and absolutely fearless."
Ron Austin in 'Cobbers in Khaki' writes about the incident:
"On the night of 19th April 1917 a patrol led by 2nd Lt George Errey came upon a German patrol of about 30 men. The 2 patrols engaged each other with rifle fire and within a few minutes the Germans withdrew from the encounter leaving behind 4 dead comrades."
Later that year in September, He was recommended for the Victoria Cross, although it was turned down, he received the Distinguished Service Order in its place for his audacious work: The citation for the Victoria Cross reads:
"For conspicuous gallantry during the attack on Polygon Wood on the 20th September 1917, after the third objective had been gained, the consolidation was greatly interfered with by heavy Machine Gun fire from an enemy strong point which caused many casualties and was beginning to disorganise our line. Lieut. ERREY with four men, in the face of very heavy Machine Gun fire rushed through our own barrage and attacked and captured the strong point together with 5 officers, 60 other ranks and 2 Machine Guns. This officer's most conspicuous bravery, determination and prompt action undoubtedly saved many lives and altered the situation at a critical moment enabling the line to be firmly established."
But on the 3rd Oct, the eve of the attack, Lieutenant Errey who was now the Battalion intelligence officer and his men laid out the white marker tape on the ground. At 5.30 the enemy shelled the rear trenches, the shelling took its toll with 3 officers being killed, Captains Rudolph Kirsch, and John Davidson and Lieutenant Errey.
He died of wounds received, aged 25 and is buried Menin Road South Military Cemetery, Belgium.

COVETED DISTINCTION WON by
CAMPERDOWN SOLDIER.
LIEUT. L. G. ERREY DECORATED.
His relatives in Campordown on Saturday received a cablegram to the effect that Lieutenant Leonard CI.
Errey, who enlisted from this town, had been awarded the distinction of .the Military Cross.
The cable message gave no particulars of hew this promising young Camperdonn, soldier won so coverted an
honor, but no doubt lull details will shortly be forthcoming.
Lieutenant Errey, who is a son of Mrs. W. H . Errcy, of Scott .street, was among the first Australians to respond to tne Empire's call. He was one of those gallent men who stormed the Gallhpoli Heights on that fateful Sunday and so can claim his share in the making of a name for Australa that will ever be cherished by
Australians so long as the nation exists.
Lieutenant Errey- fought with the doughty Anzacs through the fierce alupoli campaign, lemainiug there
until tlie evacuation. It was his good fortune to come tlnouga unscathed, and able to take part in the subsu
quent big battles in France, where the Anzacs have added further lustre to their world-wide reputation as fighters. He was among the first contingent of .Ausralians to leave Egypt for Fance, and has seen the hardest fighting in that country, and alter the battle, of Pomeres, he was granted a commission.
Now comes the good news that he has been decorated with the .Military Cross. The information will gladden
the hearts o( a host of admirers of the rising young soldier, who will also feel pride in the fact . that one of their townsmen has conducted himself with such distinction as to win this decoration. "Long Live Lieutenant Errey, M.C," will be the sentiment in this community. •
Lieutenant Errey has been particularly fortunate, having through the war since the Gallipoli landing
without mishap. His brother, Private E. B. Errey.is also at the front Prior to enlisting, Lieutenant Errey
was a prominent member of the Camperdown Rifle Club, and one of the best shots.
.Lieutenant Errey. joined tho A.I.F. as a private, aad was awarded his first stripe in Egypt, after the Dardanelles campaign, and shortly after reaching France was made a sergeant.
His brothers are Messrs. G. G., S.A., and T. H. Errey, of this town, and Mrs. Peter Errev, of Camperdown, and Mrs. Albert Bailey, of Dandenong. are sisters.

- LIEUT. L.G.P. ERREY, M.C.
Some weeks ago private information was received in Camperdown to the effect that Lieutenant L. G. P.Errey, an old Camperdownian, had been awarded the Military Cross for distinguished services in the field.
Tne facts surrounding Lieutenant Errey's advent into the fighting strength of the Empire were given in the "Chronicle" at the time, and recapitulation here is therefore unnecessary.
Official confirmation of the bestowal of the decoration was published yesterday, and the official "note," bearing on the particular deed of Lieut. Errey reads as follows. He displayed skill in defeating a patrol greatly outnumbering him."
Lieutenant Errey is a son of Mrs W. H. Errey, of Scott-street, Camperdown, to whom the congratulations of the community are offered, as well as to the gallant son who is so nobly playing his part in the cause of liber
ty and justice.

nformation
Cemetery: Menin Road South Cemetary
Grave referal II. J.
The cemetery lies to one side of the infamous Menin Road. The road ran from Ypres to the front line at a point which effectively remained static for almost the entire war. The cemetery therefore remained an Allied possession throughout the war.
It was founded in January 1916 and was used until summer 1918. After the Armistice, the neighbouring Mein Road North cemetery was concentrated into this cemetery, with additional concentration from single battlefield graves from the front itself.
The cemetery was designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield.

- The Supreme Sacrifice.
LIEUT. LEN. ERREY AND
PRIVATE P. KEENAN.
News that will cause widespread
sorrow in Camperdown and district
was received late yesterday, when the
sad information came to hand from the
Defence Department, through the
Rev. A. Dunn, that Lieut. Len.
Errey, M.C., son of Mrs W. H. Errey,
of Scott-street, Camperdown, and Pri-
vate Peter Keenan, son of Mr and
Mrs. P. Keenan, of Barkly-street, had
made the supreme sacrifice on active
service.
Lieut. Errey was among the first
to enlist and quickly worked his way
up, and also won the Military Cross
for bravery.
Private Keenan, who was 20 years
of age, enlisted some 18 months ago
and had been in France since last De-
cember.
The messages did not come to
hand until a late hour, necessitating
full particulars of the careers of
these latest two Camperdown boys to
surrender their lives in the cause of
Empire being held over to Tuesday's
"Chronicle."
Flags will be flown at half-mast
from the clock tower and business
houses to-day in respect fo the mem-
ory of the departed heroes.
