  When the widowed Gunhild and 5 of her 6 children set sail for America in 1870, a lady on the ship asked her to take the pins out of her hair so all could see how long it was.  All the passengers were amazed to see the length of it.  It swept the deck.  Later on, she cut much of it off, as it was too hot and heavy while working in the fields in the summer.
